TRUTH IS THURSDAY

(Visit Julianna to link up or read more TRUTH IS ...Thursday posts)

Truth Is....... I am very glad my boys are NOT in the local public high school. Day 3 of dealing with the school system and I am ALREADY fed-up with it. And let's not EVEN get into me having to be on a Public School schedule.

Truth Is...... I fired my lazer.

Truth Is..... I don't know if I will make it to my next acupuncture appointment.

Truth Is.... I should have opted for a massage instead of acupunture, or maybe both.

Truth Is.... I enjoy this big, busy mess of hosting a foreign exchange student! And Dashnyam is a great kid! (read about Dashnyam HERE)

Truth Is... I need to stop hosting foreign kids because each time I do my list of "Countries I want to Visit" gets longer..... Or maybe just host from countries I have already visited.... but where's the fun in THAT?

Truth Is... it is time to color my hair; cover those greys again.

Truth Is.... the boys will have more school work/less unschool this year. Sort of. Though in high school, unschool often still looks a bit like 'curriculum/classes' in a way. They decided what they wanted to learn and now will have to follow the text book/course guide and do it. I got a Lapbook/ journal for Ki to do with his science. I am sure he will "Make it His Own" though.

~ His text book, journal, and audio CD arrived today, but they sent the wrong text book, so we have to wait a week to get that to use to plan his science days.

Truth Is..... I am tired and feel to brain-dead to think of anymore "Truths."

Truth Is....

My Imaginary Friend, Julianna, over at SURVIVING BOYS does this entry sometimes.
Truth Is... Thursday

So, I thought I would do my own. But you should really go read hers.

after you read mine, of course

TRUTH IS.....
I like that my boys make smoke bombs in the morning.

TRUTH IS....
as much as I love that Ki and Connor are enjoying theater and Ki has found a niche; I will be glad when this play is over.

TRUTH IS...
I secretly hope to stay in California and not go back to Ohio.

TRUTH IS...
that last one isn't a secret. I think everyone knows it by now.

TRUTH IS...
I love playing games and was so glad to interrupt school today because my LOONEY LAB GAMES order arrived in the mail today!! I could play games all day every day.

TRUTH IS...
aside from family, gaming is the only plus I see going back to Ohio. And new friends. But gaming is really up there on the list.

TRUTH IS...
As much as I love homeschooling/unschooling, I'm slightly nervous about college. Hoping I did a good enough job teaching them how to learn.

TRUTH IS...
I am really bad at this 'truth is' game.

30 IN 30 : done my way

My Bloggy Friend, Amber, over at Be Sassy Classy always has neat, pretty outfits. She enjoys throwing together new & different outfits.. and she is very goood at it. If you like fashion- go read her blog.

ME- I don't like to have to think about clothes. I am perfectly happy wearing the same 4 outfits over and over and over and over. And the same 4 pairs of earrings. and my Green Keen Hiking Sandals with everything and to everywhere (even with skirts and to church, right Margie?). So sometimes I get a teensy bit motivated to actually put a little thought into my wardrobe. So, gals like me, who usually like their fashion-less-rut but want to sometimes get out of it, for a day- you should head to Be Sassy Classy, too.

Recently Amber took a 30 day challenge to wear the same 30 articles of clothing, remixed, for 30 days. You can read about it below and see her 30 outfits she made with 30 articles of clothing:

Be Sassy Classy: And I’m Done.: "This is my last outfit for the 30 for 30 Challenge. "

I decided that I already wear the same things over and over and over, so I need a different challenge. I have been feeling a bit slumpy lately and a bit in a rut (everywhere in my life, not just in my outfits). And I've been meaning to do SOMETHING to get our of the rut. (I figure getting out of 1 rut might get me out of the others)

So I am going to do my own "3o IN 30"

My 30 IN 30 will be too wear 30 different outfits and 30 different earrings in 30 days.

Now, I only have 3 pairs of jeans and couple pairs of leggings- so there will be overlap there.

But I will also be including as many skirts and dresses as I can find.

This will have a 2-fold purpose...no THREE-FOLD!

When I wear a pair of earrings I will then put them into a little baggy. I have been meaning to go through my jewelry for awhile and had thought of doing this but hadn't made the time. Find all the missing mates. get rid of broken ones. Match earrings with necklaces. (which I don't have many of the latter). So this will be good.

[ my bloggy friend over at I'm a Lazy Mom has a fun link-up-- what have YOU been procrastinating ...umm putting-off ... err.. meaning to do?]

GOOD BYE Pretty dragonfly earrings that I love to wear because they are cute and because Black & Silver matches most things I wear... AND because they were a gift from
my husband.

I will see you again in 30 days. (and they look so cute on the orange)

GOOD BYE Happy Breezy sundress from the thrift store- that I plan on cutting and altering anyway- and is so easy/comfy to wear with leggings, jeans, or alone.

The leggings and shoes will get worn again, I only have a few pairs of shoes Ithink.

Also, I have been meaning get rid of clothes that fit me when I was 112 pounds & in my 20s but no longer fit now that I am almost 40 and have grown into my body. And I need to go through the clothes I d have that fit. I am bad at finding things that match when I buy tops and bottoms at different times.
And I bet I have friends who will be glad that I will be getting rid of things I have had for 20+ years.

OUTFIT #1 (yesterday)

Yes, I really do have the dragonfly earrings in my ears.

THIS MEANS many negative things, too.
[1]- having to completely change my clothes to for a bike ride.. or at least change my shoes.
[2] possibly ironing clothes. and maybe my HAIR!
[3] posing for pictures 30 times in a month.

#3 will inspire me to do my pilates more though! which is something else I keep meaning to do: Regular Exercise. (Bike & Pilates mostly)

aMAZEing Day

OH My,but it is chilly. All that Eastern Snow Storm activity must have finally made it out this way. It is a mere 65 degrees today.

Where are my fuzzy bunny slippers??
(ha, just kidding, I do not like/wear/own fuzzy slippers.)

The boys did a few things on the computer this morning. Gavin's main assignment was correcting a written paragraph. It took quite a few tries and retries.

Then I sent them a youtube to watch:

and a link about Chinese New Year:

** I made homemade Chai**

Then we printed some BRAIN MAZES that our friend in Florida draws:

*CLICK the MAZE to go to his website - then you can click the word "MAZE" -or his other areas*

Ki enjoyed it so much he printed out more mazes. Connor decided to try his hand at making mazes on the computer. Gavin asked David about his process for maze making, then researched handheld rail guns... or something like that.

Ki used a Turkey Baster to suck the ickies from the bottom of the aquarium. Until the tadpoles get big enough to easily scoop out, he cleans th tank with a turkey baster. Brian made sure I wrote FROGS! on the turkey baster, so I don't get confused and use it to, say, baste a turkey. I have never basted a turkey or used a turkey baster for cooking- ever. I can see how it is still a mix-up to avoid.

I also sent THIS video to the boys, that explains how much $100 million is (that Obama said he'd cut spending for our budget).
Gavin then looked up about a jet fighter and how much just 1 costs and how many have been produced. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-22_Raptor
Gavin could spend his entire day reading at wikipedia.

Ki researched DAGORHIR.

Connor researched Plastic. Yes, plastic.

Then we all went outback to squeezed oranges:

And throw them at the wall:

and take macro pictures of insects:

CSI/Forensic Science Idea Links

I have a bad cold, maybe the flu. Sinus ickiness at any rate. No, new/great/funny blog entry. No awesome pictures. Just to let you know: I have great kids. Ki made me toast. He said "sick people like toast". And he makes pretty good toast, too! Toast is just toast, you say? Yes, you can make bad toast; burnt, too dry, to soft..... And I told them I'd drive them to see the BIG LAUNCH if hey woke me at 11:30. They let me sleep and just watched from the back yard. They could have gone to the the launch site with their dad if they wanted. They let me sleep instead. Gavin rode his bike to Starbucks to get me a latte. Yes, I paid, but he was happy to do it for me, never asked for anything for himself, (He LOVES Chai from Starbucks)

The boys did a CSI Kit yesterday. The kind you can buy at a toy store. The ones that are all colored/themed/labeled with the CSI TV Show stuff.

I was disappointed. They may be good for a little kid toy, but NOT for actual lesson plan supplements. It's not even good for 'easy practice of what we just learned'. Seriously, just do some research, but a few things and make your own classes. The stuff we have been doing so far is way better. and more fun.

So, below are links to lesson plans, online stores, and lesson books.

http://sciencespot.net/Pages/classforscistarters.html class challenges I would say Middle School and up. good for Class warm Ups, time fillers

http://www.theforensicteacher.com/Home.html Magazine Downloads, articles, instructions, more. This one is a little 'higher grade level'. More advanced? More indepth? something like that. Good for actual lessons and activities.

http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/ScienceP/forensic/ a list of different online sites for Forensic Science Lessons

http://www.thinkforensic.co.uk/index.php?id=7477 Forensic Science Worksheets. Must be a member, but I think it is a free sign up. But I forgot my password. I'll have to check saved Emails. NOTE! --> write down your log in and password and remember where you put it!!

http://library.thinkquest.org/04oct/00206/lesson.htm I haven't looked through this one well yet. As the 1st two seem to be keeping me busy. I think I'll peruse this one today.

http://www.nps.gov/archive/jeff/lewisclark2/education/MysteriousDeathLewis/MysteriousDeathLessonPlan.htm
The Mysterious Death of Lewis (Lewis & Clark). I want to use this in a week or two.

STORES ONLINE: these are where I bought our supplies.
http://www.crimescene.com/store/index.php

http://wardsci.com/Default.asp?

http://www.hometrainingtools.com/

BOOKS: we got these. I like them.
  • Crime Scene Investigation. They have Elementary and Middle-High School.
  • CSI Expert (grades5-8). It says grades 5-8, but it is just as good, even better in some places ,than the 6-12th grade book above. I suggest both books. Esp if you have a few weeks or month to devote to lots of Forensic Fun

WED/THUR

Photobucket

Wednesday the bagger at the grocery store asked if I need help to the car. It makes me wonder if they think I have a walker or am not strong enough to push a cart. It always throws me for a loop, I have to stop & think about, and I always end up stuttering a response.
"uhh. N-n-oo..I',..f-f-f-i-nr.ok."

Yes, I have to purposely rehearse my answer for the bagboy before I get in the check-out lane, so I don't sound to dorky.

I forgot to rehearse my response yesterday and paid th price by looking & acting like a moron in front of a high school kid.

I had GRAND plans for Forensics Class yesterday. But you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men...... actually, I don't know what they say. That's all I know of that phrase. But I guess they don't end well. Because they often don't.

I rolled out of bed at 8:15. I have a worse time readjusting to school times than I did with Jetlag when we flew to India & China!
I get breakfast and get dressed, actuaally, I got dressed first so I could go down into the kitchen and get breakfast. I get back upstairs to gather laundry and mentally planning my next 4 things I need to do. When I get the laundry halfway to the laundry room, Connor says he needs me to call the doctor because he'snot been able to hear out of his ears for a few days and it feels funny and like pressure.

So halfway to the laundry room I stop to call the doctor for Connor. LUCKY US the doctor had a cancellation at 9:50 that morning! It was 9:15. It takes 20 minutes to get to the doctor. I had to brush my teeth and Connor wasn't dressed..

I emailed the links and videos to Gavin and Ki. The ones I had planned on teaching to them and raeading over with them. and made a quick list of what they needed to do. Drove Connor to the doctor.

We read about Orangutans.

Connor has a lot of fluid behind his ear, but they can;t tell if it is infected. So he has meds and will need a consult with the otolaryngologist if it does not improve in 2 weeks.

get back, drop Connor off at home to start HIS school list, run back out to drop of the prescription. Back home again. Eat lunch, get the kids in the van for Improv day.

still have not had my shower.

no one shows up. We're all grumpy. We go home. The boys clean their rooms, I shower, and make ninja cookies. Eating Ninjas makes me feel better.

***************************************************************************

The wisemen brought their gifts wrapped in Evidence Bags.

Today my friend comes over for cookies & tea. The boys do their reading & Computer Programming.

Lunch. I ate while sitting in my cozy bed, watching my Pilates DVD. (I need to wacth workout DVDs before I do them)

Forensics Class.

We go over what they did on their own yesterday. I teach them some Greek work roots. They watch Forensic Science Videos. We do a lab about bullet holes in glass.

J-TERM DAY 2: C.S.I. FUN!

FIRST: if you have NOT read J-Term Day 1, go read it! It'll make reading Day 2 that much better.

SECOND: I've been doing good with my Chronological Bible Reading EVERY DAY this YEAR! How amazing! (Is it still an accomplishment if it's only been 3 days this year -today's reading will be in the evening)

THIRD: I hope I did not disappoint my boys today. There were no notes or reading or lectures to enjoy. All I had for them today was matches, super glue, brushes, and ink. AND doughnuts. They didn't seem to mind, though.

We started the day with Doughnuts, Turkey Bacon, and Vitamins. K&G seem to melt without enough protein, so I made Turkey Bacon to go with the doughnuts. I made sure they took their DHA, as some of my kids seemed to be losing focus already, by 8:30AM.

I decided to dive right into out Fingerprint Labs today. No Notes. No lectures. Just DOING.

First I had them cover the table with newspaper, then I brought out the blank index cards and some different ink pads. I told them to try the different inks and see which worked best and practice making good fingerprints. Then to make a card with all their right hand prints, and one with all their left hand prints. (yesterday we did Graphite/Charcoal fingerprints).
After they had their good 5-print cards, we went over the 3 basic types of fingerprints. WHORLS, LOOPS, ARCHES.
I have 2 arches and 2 that are half arch/half loop. the rest are loops. No whorls.
Here is the Breakdown:
65% of the population has LOOPS
30% have WHORLS
5% have arches.

Connor has an arch, too. Gavin has a couple whorls(and some half loop/whorls and loops)

After we learned about WHORLS, LOOPS, & ARCHES. They labeled their 5-Print cards accordingly.

Then we talked about the characteristics within a fingerprint (dots, short ridges, enclosures, etc)

Now that have had lots of practice making a good fingerprint and they know hoe to ID the characteristics, we each took a glove (because we did not have balloons- which was what we were supposed to use according to the book).
Blew then up just a tiny bit. Then put a fingerprint on the glove.

We then BLEW THEM UP so we could see our fingerprint details.

Then we circled characteristics. They were intrested, focused, and had fun.

CLEANED UP from that project, wash hands, put a little Vit E oil on the hands, as they were all dry from the constant use of hand wipies, wearing the gloves, and washing. We needed to make sure we had hand oils, like normal.

NEXT LAB: Fuming Hoods for Fingerprints. If you watch C.S.I. you most likely have seen them hand evidence in a fuming hood ro get the prints from it. for things that are harder to dust. We actually used simple to dust/lift otems- for the ease & success of the project.

At Home Fuming for Prints:
You need:
SUPER GLUE
ZIPLOCK BAGS
AN ITEM LIKE A FILM CANISTER.

Wipe down the film canister. Grasp it with your thumb and a couple fingers. Place it in the ZIPLOCK BAG. Add 5-6 drops of SUPERGLUE. *Do not get it on YOU, your clothes, your fingers.*. Close the bag all but an inch and then blow into the bag to fill it with air. **DO NOT breath in superglue fumes! If you have younger kids, do this part for them!
Then set them aside for a few hours. Warm with a hair dryer if you want, to help speed the process.

[ABOVE] you can see the 4 Fuming Bags with the Superglue & Film Canisters

With those set aside, we moved onto LAB #3 for the day!
Again, the table got cleared. (wow, the boys are good helpers at clearing away lab stuff - they know if I have to do it all, they won;t get these fun classes)

Then they all got a couple votive candles, matches, and a ceramic tile.
This lab was to make our own fingerprint powder: CLICK FOR THE ONLINE INSTRUCTIONS
Hold the ceramic tile over/half in the flames so it gets coated in soot.

CONNOR THOUGHT OF WAYS TO NOT HAVE TO HOLD THE TILE:

[ More Pictures on my Picture Page: Check them out! I love flame pictures!]

KI THOUGHT THE TILE WAS TOO HOT & USED GLOVES:

scrape the soot into a bowl.

Add cornstach in equal amounts as the soot.
COLLECTING SOOT TAKES A LONG TIME! all 4 of us had to coat&scrape our tiles MANY times! to get about a tablespoon . But that was about all we needed today.

I have a fingerprint brush I bought at the CSI store.

After the soot and cornstarch get all mixed...

Clean off a tile. Each person in the room made a GOOD print card of just their Right Index Finger.

Show them how to leave a print on the tile and dust for it.

Then have 1 kid leave the room. 1 person that is left in the room, firmly touches the tile (to leave a print)

The 1 kid comes back in, dust the tile for prints:

(make sure each child leaves his print somewhere new, the the Detective isn't sure where on the tile it is and has to dust all over until they find it)

tAP THE LOOSE POWDER OFF THE TILE:

Then the Detective compares the print on the tile with the Samples and decided who left the print!

This was fun, but we needed a few more kids to make it more of a challenge.

**YEAH our Homemade Fingerprint Powder worked WELL!!!!!

** DOUBLE-YEAH! Our Fuming Bags worked, too! (but I couldn't get good pictures of the prints on the film canisters with my camera- you'll just have to trust me)

** Remember: If you enjoyed my blog, please Click the Brown Bar on the bottom of the entry!

NOW the boys are off doing their Computer work. The house is so quiet when they are all 3 on computer programming and animating! Someone, bring me a Toffee Nut Latte!

Monday Madness & Mayhem

TODAY: a couple HOPS, a handful of mini-topics, and a few thoughts.

HOP #1

The above button is for a New To Me HOP. Listing things for which I am thankful. Gifts. Getting up to 1000.

Here is my list of 1,000 gifts numbers 1-10

-Facebook. Yes, facebook can be a gift and something for which to be thankful. Not just for keeping in touch with friends and family, and not just for being reunited with friends from the past, but today I am especially thankful for getting in touch with people I used to know and was not friends with back then- but becoming friends now, after all these years - and getting to see how God has been working in lives and taking the time to see how far we have all come.

-Health. A 'generic' sounding thanks, I know. But I am following it up with the particulars. Thanks that my husband's heart attack (about 6 yrs ago) was mild and there was no lasting damage. Thankful for his successful cyst removal surgery last week.

-Bracelet. My son made a bracelet for me, for Christmas. I love when the boys make things for me.

-Ninjas. The kind that cut cookies, anyway. Connor made Ninja Cookie Cutters for me.

-Future Ninjas. Ki gave me a pictorial list of different Ninja Cookie Cutter ideas from which to choose and he will make a couple cookie cutters, too

-modern transportation of groceries- so I can enjoy oranges and pears and other fruits and veggies out of season and out of local.

- Digital Camera. I love my digital camera that allows me to capture so many memories and moments. (with out the cost of buying new film and printing all 36 pictures just to get 10 good ones)

- boxes. Yes boxes. so I can pack and organize everything.

-plastic. it is fairly cheap, sturdy, colorful or clear- and allows me to be able to buy enough boxes to color code and organize things.

-Thrift Stores- A good place to get rid of our excess and a place to buy an extra pair of jeans for my boys who are growing like weeds and always seem to have outgrown everything, esp last minute.

NOW onto a few Thoughts:

Gavin has been out back shooting his new Air Soft Pellet Gun. It's a riffle of some sort. Brian and the 3 boys have been having a Magic Card Elimination Showdown. With all their new cards, between the 4 of them they had 18 decks. They made a flowchart of games and which deck won each. Winning Decks playing winning decks..... to see which decks are best. This may confuse you. That's OK. It confuses me, too. I will have to find out which deck won and let all of you know. That may clear up some of your confusion.

I played DICEcapades Sunday evening with my family. Connor can be a bit hard to handle with games. He debates everything. It's almost like a defense mechanism until he really gets nto the game and understands it. then he's all giggles and fun. He now know how to milk a cow backwards, though.

And Those Lists:
I love lists. on Sunday I made a list of all the things I wanted to talk about in my next blog. I think I'll keep the List as is and just fill it in with blogging. And, yes, I do this frequently. Make a little entry with reminders of what to blog or what links to include.

  • Juicer - It is once again time to get out the juicer and juice lots of fruits and veggies. I like to do lots of juicing for a week after 'big eating'. It helps me feel better. I need to get some baby spinach and pears & grapes. I have more than enough carrots. Not sure how we got so many carrots in this house. Strawberries are good in the juicer, too! but feels like a waste of a strawberry. I like to ad a little ginger root to the berry juices, too.
  • J-Term-It is almost time for J-Term to start. I have most of the CSI Class planned. I just need to review it so I can have everything needed for week 1 all gathered and in place. I need to get lesson plans for the other stuff though. Ki wants Culinary/Acting.(so probably alternating them every-other-day). Connor and Gavin will be doing computer Programming/animation.
  • Pilates- and Yoga. This is the exercise portion of my entry. I really want to do Yoga daily and get my Pilates DVD out, unwrap the cellophane, and actually USE IT. Not sure if I will get started today. But I plan on it. I'll let you all know.
  • 12 Days of Christmas- We did this last year (or 2 years ago), too. The boys seem to like it. We don't put up our Chrostmas Tree until Christmas Eve, but we keep it up for the 12 Days of Christmas. On those 12 days we read the Christmas Story/Wise Men (from the Bible), sometimes do gifts. This year I am hiding the 3 wisemen. each boy finds one and then gets a small gift (from the Dollar Store or Dollar Bins at other stores). Then we Have KING CAKE for Epiphany! I think we will do the Feast of the Innocents this year, too.
  • Rocket launch in the yard- I'll do this one tomorrow.
  • http://myadventures-in-mommyland.blogspot.com/ mommy monday hop. A New To Me Blog Hop I am doing with this entry. So click the button, join the hop, make new friends!

39

Scary, huh? This is me an any given day. Comfy Clothes. Pony Tail. No Make Up. No earrings. I have gotten lazy. not that it was all that different before I was Very Lazy. I used to just be Moderately lazy, but still wore earrings most days and at least lip gloss. [I do not even think THE LAZY MOM would be proud of me.....]

I need one of those Talk Show Makeovers. Hair, nails, make-up, new-up to date-wardrobe.
Trouble is, I'd go home and without my crew of hair, wardrobe, make-up assistants, I'd be right back in my rut.

People tell me I don;t look old enough to have kids the ages of my boys. It's the pony tail and lack of make-up.... and the hair color that covers the greys.(seriously, if you saw all the grey hairs, You'd think I was 55) My birthday is this week. I'll be 39. Maybe in a few years I'll actually start dressing like a grown woman instead of a lazy 19 year old.

OOOH... and looky there... my grey hair is starting to show..NO, don't look!!
But, oh to have the dress size I did back then....LOL. Another Trip to the store is in order- but I do not have the time.

My new friend at Sassy Classy(click to read her blog) keeps blogging about shopping. Whilst I detest shopping, it has got me to thinking.... I probably should own a long black skirt. and maybe a nice blouse (all I seem to have are comfy knit tops or sleeveless tops).

The poinsettias above are at the church where we were today. I thought it an interesting view. My new friend Gabby has some Christmas Pictures. Hers are better and have a cute dog, too. She even won doggy shampoo for 1 of them!

The boys are in a Christmas Skit. A whole Showcase of many skits. Connor and Ki are in 4 different skits each. plus there are songs. Actually a skit got cut, and a song, and some lines from a longer skit. It is not what any of us thought it would be. I will be so happy when it is over. I am tired if driving to SLO and Back twice a week. And Daily this week. They have been practicing so many weeks I think they are ready to quit before the performance. But it will be good. It will be fun to watch. It will be memorable. Gavin is helping with tech work.

The Above would be my Connor. Probably "In Character" for Uncle Milfred.

there will not be much school this week. 3 hours of rehearsal daily (and all that driving) is just too draining on all of us.
