KIA[6]

Me, Ki, and the Cat. It's a small family these days with 3 of our members away on a trip.

Ki and I are having Adventures. This little blog is about Day #6. Monday.

I like this little pace to our days we have going.
He made his breakfast, I made mine- whenver we wake up. He does his morning chores. I wash some dishes.

We read or play on the computer a bit, talk about lunch plans, go for a bike ride, do a little cleaning. I hung my laundry. WOWSERS, opur laundry and groceries are almost non-exsitent compared to when there are all 5 of here!

We do our own lunches, too. We clean up from lunch then I was on the phone making toomany phone calls while Ki went out back to make a fire in the wheelbarrow again.

He used this fire to warm the PVC pipe he was working with:

A little later he made a yummy treat for us. He toasted some almonds and then melted some chocolate with sea salt for a yummy bark snack:

I was on the phone more, read my book I styarted a long time ago and had to back track a few chapters, then Ki and I cleaned our bathrooms. It was his idea. Yesterday he said "We should clean our bathrooms on Monday." So we did.

After that we read in his Science book. We were reading about muscle types. Skeletal Muscles, Smooth Muscles, and Cardiac Muscles. I read from the book; "Cardiac Muscles is only found in one place in humans. Time Lords have Cardiac Muscles in 2 locations."

I Ad-Lib when I read to them. And, yes, I still use silly voices when reading to my high school age boys.  The section kept talking about our SUPERSTRUCTURE and I always said it like a super-hero with a deep voice speaking in a tunnel....

Ki helped me pick flowers to put in my vase then he got started making dinner. I ws going to make dinner myself, but I had told him my plan for dinner and he thought it ws fun, so he got to work on getting things ready. I was getting hungry I guess. So we both did our part to create tonight's dinner:

Compartment Cuisine -->

Ki arranged them around our centerpiece and asked what game I wanted to play. I chose Fluxx.

Ki has his cake decorating class tonight. I'll post a picture in tomorrow's blog.

here they are.....

A picture of the boys at the Acupuncture Open House. They had Martial Arts demo, art display, tribal instruments from different countries, food, needles, message, and more.

Ki got Ear Points and a massage. I just got a massage.

The boys sent me their intended class plans for school. for a few months. We'll try it till our winter break and see if adjustments need to be made. Unless of course it REALLY doesn't work and we need to adjust sooner. I am hoping they will self adjust. Ki is usually good at self-adjusting.

Connor's List:

3600 seconds of math statistics and probability a day
- www.khanacedemy.com
- TopShelf Statitstics (Book *click here to see)

- Possibly, Standard Deviants supplement and brushing up on Alg if needed

read "Lord of the Rings" before next year

1 chapter of science a week (*until finished with the Chemistry Course, but I think it takes 2 weeks to do a good job on a chapter. I'll let him try 1 a week and see how long it takes to change his mind.)

learn Japanese for 2700 seconds a day - with Gavin. (program TBA)

Computer Illustration class at Allan Hancock College 8 hours a week(inc lab)

----------------------------------------------------------------

GAVIN'S LIST:

2 chapters 3rd edition calculus and analytical...geometry (Brian's College Book)
*Supplemented with the following if needed:
-google
-khan
-dad
-Standard Deviants, other online or library sources as/if needed

30 minutes Japanese a day
-unless it has chapters on the program.
-May use flash cards and google

*We have not chosen our program yet. and I will suggest 45 minutes, but 30 may work. He'll be working with Connor.

Drawing livestream it from about 6 to 10+ pm Tuesday Wednesday and maybe Friday
(*he needs to show me he can have his morning work done by 9Am without reminders and with getting up on his own before I will permit computer drawing until 10PM)

Read one book of "LOTR" by end of Sept

Computer illustration at AHC

(he will be finishing up Chemistry, too)

___________________________________

KI'S List of "EVIL SCHOOL"- as he put it

-math 1 Khan video and 30 min of work a day *(I will ask him to follow a course, in order)

-read 3 pages a day in LOTR

-get to 3 pull up in a row (*he also makes sure he rides his bike a few times a week)

-register for acting class at Pismo- * not sure what the dates/times will be for that.

-you were going to give me science. *He will be doing Apologia General Science CD-Rom. I will have him look up extra experiments (that are more fun that theirs- which are boring) and videos.

*And I have him cook a couple meals a week as part of his school- since he wants to be a chef. but he usually asks to, so it's not really like making him.

College Classes start on Aug 23 (for G&C). I suggested C watch some Pre-Cal vids on Khan before he starts in his book (Sept 6)

Ki likes to ease into school, so I will leave that up to him. I will tell him he needs ti figure out what he needs to do to ease into school, becuase we will be starting 'full day' on Sept 6. he is good at making his own plans for stuff like that.

Let's give a hand to the Deviants!

The boys froze water.

in balloons.

and latex gloves.

For the purpose of THROWING them and watching them shatter.
(and drinking the not-yet-frozen-water out of them)

They watched the water bubbles move inside them and looked the air bubbles inside, too

I have some Chemistry DVDs from Netflix. They are the Standard Deviants ones. I have the boys watching them this week, as kind of an overview before we get back into the DVD course. I was watching them watch them and listening to Gavin who is re-explaining pretty much everything, with more detail and more examples. So, I wonder why I even bother teaching him. This is how it has been his whole life. He always seems to already know what I get ready to teach him. I think he should be my co-teacher for this course. (we are using Apologia High School Chemistry DVD Course)

I just need a place to list all my planned experiments all together. to make it easy for me to gather everything we need.
These are pretty much the NON-DVD Experiments (demonstrations).
just for me to remember.

This is why I need to workout more:

Ki made Bacon-Pancake-Poppers for breakfast.
Bacon dipped in Pancake Batter and fried. Like a Bacony-Breakfast Hush Puppies:

here is the link: BACON PANCAKE POPPERS

And when my son makes a wonderful breakfast, I'd be a bad mom too refuse all of it..right??

This is why I am no longer 120 pounds.

We made 'funner cake' with the extra batter.

YUM!

Ki made some with piggy bacon and some with turkey bacon.

I used those clear squeeze bottles (like they use for ketchup or mustard)- cut off more of the tip- then squeezed the thick batter out- for Squiggles.

Below: One Bacon Popper and some Squiggles:

Powder Sugar is great on the squiggles (they are basically funnel cake)

Cooking is part of Ki's "school work".

He makes breakfast 2-3 times a week and sometimes dinner or lunch or a dessert.

**I saw a question on Hip Homeschool Moms facebook today. Advice for homeschooling more than 1 child.
My advice; "teach them early on how to make their own breakfast so you can sleep in."

Thorough Thursday:

I was debating between doing a THANKFUL THURSDAY or a TRUTH IS: THURSDAY.

I decided to do both, thus making it a Thorough Thursday.

Truth Is: I probably complain too much to Gavin about being on the computer. Most of what he does on the computer is drawing with his tablet and art program, and making videos. Or researching stuff. He keeps his gaming to about an hour a day I guess. I feel like he is on the computer a lot. too much. But the computer art and programming is the directins he wants to go after school. If he wanted to be a chef and was cooking all the time I'd not complain. Or if he wanted to be a chemist and was always doing stuff with the chemistry set, I'd not complain. So if he wants to go into computer programming or computer animation, I should not complain about him doing that often.

Thankful: that he has a passion and talent and practices to improve.
Thankful: that homeschooling gives him lots of time and opportunity to hone his skills.

Here is his latest video/drawing. He'd LOVE if you went to youtube and left him a comment or friendly critique. (for more videos by Gavin, visit his Yutube Page; dashermkii)

Truth Is: I am sporting fake fingernails. The kind you buy at Rite-Aid and glue on. I fingernails are thin, peel, rip, and split. I had 4 ripped/split nails last week and got tired of it. They kept catching on things and getting ripped further. If I had time & money I'd have a nail salon just paint them with acrylic- so I don't look like... a chick with long pink fingernails.

Thankful: for options to improve my fingernails.
Thankful: for Superglue- good for fingernails AND lifting fingerprints!

Truth Is: We raise and harvest mosquito larvae.
Thankful: I can't really think of thankfulness for this one... I am thankful that over 20 of the tadpoles survived into froghood.

Truth Is: I found some recipes in my new book "Food the Die For!". Recipes that sound yummy and I want to make. But, truth is, no one else in my immediate family will eat this stuff.
Thankful: for friends who will come to my house for garlic soup and squash & chestnut stuffed ravioli.

Truth Is: I would LOVE to serve on Jury Duty. I have been 'called' 3 times but they always end up not needing me. :: pouty face :: But the people that do NOT want to serve and try to get out of it- end up the ones that get to do it.

Truth Is: I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MY BOYS IN THEIR PLAY NEXT WEEK... darn fake nails and trying to type. I hit the CAPS LOCK,
Thankful: for the chance for Connor and Ki to act and perform!

ABC's of homeschooling

ABCs of Homeschooling

But I saw this at Homeschooling for His Glory- so I have to say I am taking it from Joelle, not from 5kidsandadog. Credit where Credit is due- and that is in 2 places this time.

I will be doing a couple of letters at a time, because I am not consistent enough to do them on schedule.

A is for Autodidact- That is why I homeschool- to help my boys become autodidacts; someone who is self-taught. For us that means allow them the freedom to follow their passions and interests, to not let 'school' get in the way of learning. I may not have taught my boys everything from the long list of 'Facts taught to kids all throughout school'- but I taught them something more important. How to learn on their own. How do decide what they need to know and then teach themselves. Elementary Years are easy. They boys are little sponges learning everything and asking about everything. The Junior High years are the ones that make you doubt as they chill out and just... exist.... but now that they are in the High School years, I am seeing it all come together. Well, Ki is still in the Junior High phase, but he has always been the more 'self-directed' of the three.

I bought them these T-Shirts a few years ago.....
"I can't go to school.... I'm autodidactic."

Things brings me to thought of discussing unschooling- but I'll leave that for "Q"
OTHER A's: Amtgard. Animals. Art. Advice (we all seem to get a lot of that as homeschoolers, LOL)

B is for BOYS- because I am homeschooling 3 boys, it seemed like a good choice for this 2nd letter in the alphabet. I am surrounded by boys. I am teaching boys. I assume this is a different ball game them homeschooling all girls. Our days are filled with
Making their own Ninja Throwing Stars and a target board- in the back yard.
Dissecting Cow Hearts.... in the back yard.
ParKour practice...in the back yard...
Making & Wielding Renaissance Weapons.. in the back yard...
Hmmm this is why I often have the gardener skip doing the backyard.....

Maybe "B" should have stood for "BACKYARD"

We also have less violent things happen in the backyard. Gavin grows strawberries. Ki collects Mosquito Larvae for his tiny froglets. Connor lays in the sun and pets his cat. I lead Nijna Training Exercises.

I love having boys! I'm more of a Hiking in a creek, catching newts, and dissecting cow heart- kinda girl than a ruffles, bows, and pink kinda girl. But I guess if I had a girl she'd not be too into pink and ruffles anyway.

My boys have been good at insisting they learn when they are ready- regardless of it it lines up with my timing or a schoolbook's timing.

some were doing basic algebra at 6 and some didn't read till 5th grade.... or at 4 yrs, but refused to read around me until much much later- when they were ready for me to have confirmation they could read. Some refused to count to 6 until they were 6 years old.

That makes it sound like I have 5 or 6 boys.....no. Just the 3 of them.

and I can't imagine them having nearly the success in public school that they do here and now. I am thankful we get to let them learn their own way.

OTHER B's: Backyard, Biology, Bible, Bored, Books, Blog, Blessed

Cow Hearts & Caviar

Samantha's Day
Just another day learning with the boys.

YES: the Cow Heart part of the post is probably as icky as you thought it might be.
NO: the Caviar part of the post isn't icky at all.

This is a cow heart -- (Brian said NO to the head but he OK'd the heart)

This is Connor videotaping Ki as he dissects the cow heart --

This is Ki being silly and pretending he is eating the cow heart -- >

There were other Ki Posing pictures, but I thought I'd spare you. And there were other dissection pictures, again, I thought I'd spare you those.

Gavin had no interest in the dissection, but he came out and looked at the chambers and arteries and stuff after we were finished cutting. Connor just wanted to make one cut to see what it was like. Ki enjoyed investigating the bovine muscle. When he was done he got online and found some pics and videos of cow heart dissection. Yes- we do things a bit out of order here at The Learning Path School for Autodidactic Boys.
*(I thought it was awesome! I loved Anatomy Class and this was way better than the rubbery frog we dissected in Biology Class!.)

Now Onto the Caviar part of this post......
Ki made cupcakes and topped them with mint caviar.

He made his own Mint Syrup with mint leaves, Karo, and a little green food coloring. He added sodium alginate them dropped the syrup into a water with calcium lactate. It formed the small 'caviar' shaped spheres. (His Culinary Arts Class)

This was the first time I have ever eaten caviar. But being that this caviar only has the same shape of fish egg caviar and it is made up mint and syrup, I'm not sure it counts as my first caviar. I want to make Watermelon caviar!

The boys are gone camping with the guys from the church group. The youth group leader is basically a kid himself. I hope they come back in 1 piece. well, 3 pieces I guess. 1 for each boy. That'd be weird to get back 1 conglomerate of the 3 of them.

I need to take some knitting pictures. I paused the DNA scarf and started a sleeveless top. I will get some pictures up soon.

I have no plans for Easter. none. at. all. Brian will be out of town and there is no family close. I'll have to ask the boys what they want to do.

Oh, and we'll be getting back to Chemistry Class next week. YAY! I love science! I love the planning involved in teaching 1 science to 3 different levels of boys!

Caribbean French Toast w/ Coconut Syrup

Oh, how I love that my son is into culinary arts!
Oh, how I love that he makes breakfast 3 days a week.
Oh, how I love when I assign him an extra yummy breakfast recipe!
(yeah for homeschooling them in the areas of their passions)

I printed this recipe and assigned it to Ki as his Morning Breakfast to make for Culinary Arts Class.

**************************************************************

Caribbean French Toast

(3 servings)

  • For The French Toast:
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup whipping cream
  • 2 Tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash of ground nutmeg
  • 6 slices French bread - about 1-inch thick
  • butter or margarine for frying

  • For The Coconut Syrup:
  • 1/2 can of coconut milk
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 3 Tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons shredded sweetened coconut

First prepare the syrup: In a sauce pan over medium heat, stir the coconut milk with the cornstarch until the cornstarch dissolves. Add all remaining ingredients. Increase heat to high - stir often. As soon as the mixture reaches a rolling boil, turn off the heat. Set aside.

For the French Toast:

In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the orange juice, whipping cream, sugar and spices.

Prepare a large skillet by placing it over medium-high heat and melting 1 Tablespoon of butter.

Place the sliced bread into the egg mixture and flip to coat completely. Let each slice sit in the mixture for about 20 seconds to absorb the mixture.

Fry the bread in the prepared skillet (add as many bread slices as the skillet will comfortably hold). After about two minutes, check if the underside has browned. Flip and fry the other side to golden brown. When cooking in batches, add a little more butter or margarine each time.

Place French Toast on serving plates and serve with the warm coconut syrup.

A little taste of Jamaica for breakfast. The French Toast is also delicious with maple syrup as a topping if you want to skip the coconut syrup. This is so good with fresh fruit as a side dish.

Mr Breakfast would like to thank The Boss for this recipe.

Recipe number 2552. Submitted 5/14/2009.

******************************************************

This recipe found at: http://www.mrbreakfast.com/superdisplay.asp?recipeid=2552#

The Chef in Action

We don't like our french toast soggy in the middle, so we don't soak it. It was enough egg mixture for almost a whole loaf of Texas Toast using the, 'quickly dip it' method.

****************************************
This week I am puling out all the science kits we've not done/finished. I'll set them all out and the boys can do what they want with them all week. I think I'll assign 3 days that it is required to do something...maybe. or maybe they'll do more with none assigned.. we'll see.

Mango Spaghetti and Raspberry Ravioli

Today, Ki made a snack for us. Mostly for me, as Gavin was asleep and Connor won't eat this.

Today, Ki used his Molecular Gastronomy Kit for the first time.

Today he made Mango Spaghetti and Raspberry Ravioli.

Today he learned what agar Agar is and what 'real' caviar is.

Culinary Arts is Ki's main school subject.

here are pictures from today's class in Molecular Gastronomy.

Puree mango (with a little sugar)

Pour into saucepan-->

Add Agar-Agar. heat to a boil -->

suck into a syrnge.

Fill Tube, (put in ice water for 3 minutes)

Squirt onto a plate. (Ki let me do this one!)

Raspberry Ravioli- Puree raspberry with sugar & Calcium Lactate

Drop by teaspoons into a Sodium Alginate bath

Ki made too many at once and they stuck together. But has a game plan for next time! and smooshy or not, it was yummy!!

Sucking up Mango S'getti!

Ready for Monday?

I am. Well, maybe not, but it's gonna happen anyway.

I sent emails to the boys for their school this week. They were short.(the emails, not the boys. Well, not Gavin. Ki still kinda is, but that's not the point) I gave myself wiggle room to add whatever I wanted later by closing with "other random assignments through out the week."

I like wiggle room.

I thought I'd share their emails:

To Gavin-

DAILY:

READ in your Bible. Chose a book of the bible and read through it in order. 2 chapters daily. (REPLY to this, stating what book in the Bible you are reading this week.)

Spend a minimum of 45 minutes with Khan Math. This week you have a specific assignment. Watch 3 videos in Geometry daily. Take notes (should be easy as he teaches with notes on a board). Use a Spiral Bound Notebook. Do the Geometry sections on the Practice Map. If you get through the videos and exercises and have not met your time requirement- then just do whatever other Khan math you want to get the time.

Read 2 Current Event News articles Daily. Use a notebook and record the date and title and brief 2-3 sentences about it.

Grammar CD-Rom- tell me what you have done, where you are, scores, etc. I'll decide what to have you do next on it after I see where you are.

OTHER STUFF: There will be random assignments through out the week. Chemistry class together, Library research, etc. <------ WIGGLE ROOM

***I think I'll send them all 3 to the Library tomorrow (monday) for math and reading, maybe research.

@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@

I am SO BAD about collecting assignments.

@~@~@~@~@

Ki came back from his bike ride, proudly exclaiming that now 6 people (strangers) in the neighborhood all know that he can't say the alphabet. (yes, Ki is 14. He sees no need to be able to say the letters in order. I think he on purpose block that skill because he thinks it is neat to say that he can't)

I told asked him; "BUT, what if you need to take a job as a secretary and you need to file papers??"

he told me if he ever needed to be a secretary, then he'd learn the alphabet, but he doubts he'll ever need that skill.

Me... I know that when/If Ki needs to- he will learn it. (and I needed to cheat and sing the song from start to finish to figure out what came next even in College)

So- now you know. I failed in teaching my kids the Alphabet song.

-ISH

Some school-ISH things going on around here lately.

  • Today, Ki decided for his research he'd watch Our Town on DVD. Our "Three R's" are Reading, 'Rithmatic, and RESEARCH. They have to 'research something'. Ki decided Our Town counted as research for his acting class.
  • Gavin announced his math (online course) had gotten to where he needed a calculator. I responded with; "so, get one." I'm not sure what math it is exactly. He does whatever he wants from their site for math.
  • I had Connor explain logarithms to me, as I saw he had gotten proficient on the website at them. I have no idea what they are. Well, I do know. I asked Connor what their purpose was and he said "It's just one of those "learning for the sake of learning" things. Ah, I taught him well........
  • Ki finished his menu and grocery list for Friday's dinner. Sub Sandwich Buffet. (plus he made waffles today and that awesome pancake buffet)
  • Gavin will be doing the programs for the Play that Connor and Ki are doing. Windows Publishing 2007 or an equivalent. here's hoping it pans out well.
  • I finally passed Subtraction level in Khan. It took 2 glasses of White Zinfindel. Maybe if I drank in high school my math grades would have been better....
  • I challenged Ki to 26 Lat Pull Downs on the workout bench. He met that challenged and upped it to 30. So after my 26, I had to do 30. My arms will be SORE tomorrow! I need to have him agree to a Pilates Challenge. Maybe that will motivate me.
  • Ki & Connor are doing TAG TEAM writing for their writing assignment. They each write a little on the same story. Connor wants the aliens to be good and Ki wants them to be evil. This could be a very interesting story!
  • I cleaned out the chest cavity of the stinky, boobless mannequin today. The pastor's mom gave me some industrial odor spray stuff.
  • I like asparagus. I never did before living here.

falling......

Ki made Breakfast today. He had a Pancake Buffet. I love pancake buffet! I skip my 'protein/fruit smoothie' for Pancake Buffet!. He makes the batter and has bowls of chocolate chips, blueberries, pecans, cinn. coated diced apples, etc...- we order what we want and he makes them!

I know you are all jealous now.
BTW- I always order the Apple Pecan pancakes!
they are SO GOOD! Not too sweet, and have fruit & protein!

Having a child who wants to be a chef when he grows up is very beneficial!

***********************************

30IN30 update:
I've been wearing different earrings and tops/outfits daily. a few skirts even, and more than 1 pair of shoes for the whole week. it is tiring. but Brian seems to like it. Probably cause I am wearing my black heels more often.... and skirts.

here some of the things from the past week:
Nevermind. I can't find them. and the ones I took with Manual focus are OUT of focus- so I probably need glasses or something. I will post Sunday's outfit now and get the rest up later,

AND I have pictures of last Wednesday top & Earrings

************************************
SCHOOL:

All 3 boys have finished (what they had as their goal) for www.ALEKS.com and have moved to using KHAN Academy. Aleks is very good! but cost money. too much with 3 kids.
But, I do like Khan even better. And not just because it has a better price. (free)
  • the boys can log in with google or facebook- 1 less password/login name to memorize
  • It loads MUCH faster. With ALEKS I always had wait for the page to open, then wait for each boys info to be gathered to open their own pages.
  • It keeps track of JUST time spent DOING the actual math, unlike ALEKS with counts all time they are logged-in, even if they are sidetracked to pet the cat for 20 minutes.
  • even Ki likes it.
  • I'd mention it's free as a PLUS, but I did say 'reasons not just because of it's free price'
Connor asked to go to the Library today to do reading and KHAN. Ki liked this idea, too, so I grabbed my knitting and biked with them to the library. They did math and reading. I knit.

When we got back home, Gavin was almost done with his schoolwork. He thought he did enough math, until I showed him that he had not, according to the Khan Website. So he much have been counting- all minutes on the site'- not how many of those were DOING math.
